SCOUTMASTERS' MINUTES/ADVISORS' MOMENT IN TIME

Some research that I was doing for a class led me to this month's SCOUTING
magazine, wherein someone asked if there was a booklet on "Scoutmaster's
Minutes" available. The guy (Earle Peterson, Associate National Director
of Operations..soon to be the National Director of Operations) replied that
there was a booklet printed many moons ago, but as the Scouting program
changed, the booklet became obsolute and the need for those were diminished.
So, I called up Mr. Peterson and asked him "What Council would still have the
booklets?" He replied thaat if someone has a copy, that it would be at a yard
sale or a flea market or through someone dealing in Scouting memorbilia.
(I'll check down south, if some of you can check your way).
In the meantime, I *know* that there are lots of Scoutmaster's Minutes and
Advisors' Moments in Time out there....(oops...sorry.
The Scoutmaster's Minute is a brief story (not the way I tell them, but brief)
told at the closing minutes of a campout, a meeting or a Court of Honor. They
usually have a moral or morale-booster ending to them, but sometimes they
make you go (in Arsenio Hall's and some group's song words,) "ummmmmmmmmmm"
(*hold finger to head*). The Advisors' Moment in Time is a similar vehicle
used at the closing of mostly outdoor adventure ("high adventure" Posts and
many Sea Exploring Ships (where its called the Skipper's Minutes).
There are a few SM minutes that are found in some Scouting publications, the
most notibly the Program Helps and the Scoutmaster's Handbook. There is also
a book published in 1986 called "In the Words Of...." where more than 100
well-known personalities expound on one (or more) of the 12 points of the Scout
I have those and use those in the many speeches and talks I've done over the
past 12 years. What I am looking for, and what you can help me and the movement
with is a *newer*, more modern version of the Scoutmaster's/Advisors'
Minute, either from personal experience and knowledge or from the papers, the
many other sources that you have access to and I don't.
What I would like to do is to compile them and make them available to you in
a file form. I will also send a copy to the Editorial Service @ National
so that maybe, just maybe, they can reprint the booklet (called "scoutmaster's
Minutes and other inspirational talks for Boy Scouts and Explorers") and
help us to inspire a new set of Scouts and Explorers (and man, do WE need that!)
Please send whatever you have to me: BSAWALTON@EKU or SLDWALTN@EKU (if you send
it there, please make it as brief as possible...I only have 1500 blocks on the
