The "first year patrol" does work but in this short time between work and
still more work, allow me to place my own two point five cents in this.
You are both right. Kathie, the Patrol Method works when you have a group
of boys that "knows" each other for a while and are "jelling together" as
a group already...there is no "train-up" period to get this done as opposed
to existing patrols with members that come and go during the year...
But Adrian is also right in this matter, when he says that potential Patrol
members should have the option of belonging to whatever patrol wants them.
If a former WEBELOS knows the Patrol Leader or some other member of a
existing Patrol, then by all means place him in that Patrol.
The entire idea of the Patrol Method, (at least from my readings) is to
develop "gangs of service-oriented friends" that will last from the time
they join until the time they leave the Troop. Either way is acceptable
and both ways work...well...I'll leave this for another posting.
