I have not received any mail from this list lately. This concerns me.
I would like to continue receiving mail from this list, and I would
likewise enjoy continuing to post here.
I received a few email messages telling me not to flame or attacke
people in the group. I have no problem with that, but I do think that
we need to have a common understanding of what a flame is. I have no
doubt that some of my postings were upsetting to some folks; they were
intended to be. But flames? I don't think so. If someone posts
something that is logically inconsistent and I call it such, that's not
a flame, at least I don't think it is. Moreover, if someone spouts
some grandiose concoction that begins "Throughout history, people have
believed X," and I point out that only an ignorant person could truly
believe that he: (a) knows all of history and (b) can write cogently on
it, well, that's not a flame either. That's calling a grandfalloon a
However, in the interests of civility, I would be happy to refrain from
using the same terminology that I have used in the past. When I
analyze someone's posting, I will do so in detail, and not just dismiss it.
So, can we please continue the discussion?
