At a recent OA section conclave, a simular discussion had come up.
Many ORGANIZATIONS are DUMPING scouting. PTA's are dropping sponsorships
for various reasons, to include posible insurance and licability problems.
But it that the true or only reason? I can't say? But the local dicsussion
Kind of got more into the CHILD abuse issue, and reported problems with
pregnacies of female camp staff, which occured at camp!! Which is worse?
A female camp staff member that was reported to have virtutally solicited
sex with under age boys? Or a GAY (male) staff member that may be a great
waterfront director, that lost his job, when his "gayness" was uncoveder?
Both have been reported! But so have abuse of children by parents, sports
coaches and even teachers! I would like to see some statistics on the
reported number of "incidents" incolving cases of scout aged youth, to get
a better picture of the degree of the purcieved threat to society.
for eaxmaple: How many reported child abuse incidents are reported where
the child was abused OR MOLESTED by a parent??? #?
How many " " " by another relative #?
HOW many " " " by a teacher or coach #?
HOW many " " " by a male scout leader #?
HOW MANY " " " by female scout leader #?
How many " " " by GAY leader (male or female)
What about reports of sexual ativity now being reported
with the number of females on staff and in COED groups ?
Is that reason to exclude females from camp? (We can't
expect a teenaged BOY to resist this temptation can we?)
My opinion is that BSA and many people on this list need to get the FOCUS
back into a clear definition of scouting! Scouting and BSA will (and are)
losing a lot by officially excluding Gays. Sure there may a few "incidents"
where gays have been at fault, but BSA an our society has more significant
problems than trying to keep a few gays leaders out of scouting! (opinion)
still scouting since '57
