SF School Distric

It is true that the BSA is being dicriminatory in its attitude towards
Gay and Lesbian Scouters, and this may seem be be a rational basis
for the decision of the SF School district to ban in school programs.
However the school district is in essence being discriminatory as well
if it allows ANY military recruiters into the schools, since the
military stance on this issue makes BSA look positivly moderate.
The attitude of the BSA to Scouting towards Gays is really a little
odd given that even the most "friendly" biographies of B-P suggest
that he was a suppressed homosexual and some of the "unfriendly"
ones suggest that he was active as a homosexual. We will
probably never know the truth, but you just have to read
some of the early editions of Scouting for Boys to wonder.
As for working for change in the BSA the only way things will really
change, whatever National do,is if grassroots people keep on pressing
for change. Example-at WEBELOS camp this year I was particularly
distressed by the grace we had on the first evening it was very
Christocentric - this has been a recurring problem in our Council
where most of the Council is rural white Protistant but Morgantown
being the home of a large University has a very diverse population.
This means that my pack as Christians (of various types from Catholics
to Baptists and Quakers to Greek Orthodox), Jews, Muslims, and Hindus.
(at present no Buddists or Toaist but in this town you never know). So
I went and complained th the Camp Director - and while he did not
altogether agree with me (the old it does not matter how you pray -
and anyway we are the majority augument) he did change the grace and
for the rest of the week we had the Philmont Grace, silence or an
attempt at an ecumenical grace. I have no doubt that next year we
might go through the same thing again but if you are persisstant
change will come in the end. (having had a go at our District Chairman
over his prayers at the end of District Meeting he not only made the
prayer ecumenical bu also non-sexist!!!!!).
