Jayne, I too grieve for those families, the Girl Scout council and every
one involved. For four years I was the administrator of the Juliette Low
Wider Opp. for girls to explore careers in working with the physically
disabled. It was a year round job just to bring off 2 8 day sessions, plus
the home hospitality, plus all the other little details. Those girls went
to this Wider Opp. with such dreams and their families were so proud of them
just to be chosen for the event.
By the way, just as an introduction. I am the director of the American
Humanics program at Rockhurst College in Kansas City. This curriculum
trains college students to enter careers in the nonprofit. An example
of the careers in Boy Scouting and Girl Scouting. My background in the
nonprofit was with the Girl Scouts, 16 of those years as a member of the
executive staff and 16 years as a Girl Scout volunteer. Now I collaborate
with those agencies to provide college students as volunteers and set ukp
internships for students who wish to enter those agencies professionally.
There are 9 more agencies affiliated with American Humanics nationally.
The YMCA, YWCA, 4-H, Camp Fire, Inc. Girls, Inc., Junior Achievement,
Boys and Girls Club, Big Brothers/Big Sisters.
