OA service and Ice Cream

This may be a little too specific for some readers of Scouts-l, but bear
with me. Last night at our first week of summer camp we started a weekly
tradition (during camp). We had an Ice Cream social at the Dinning Hall
for all OA members in camp and all scoutmasters. About 40-50 showed up
and made fast work of the Peanut butter fudge, Rocky Road and Spumonie (sp?).
A good time was had by all, but wait there's more. We were able to enlist
those scouts for help during the ordeal to start Wednesday, but the best
was: The lodge advisor asked all ordeal members to stand up. Nearly everyone
stood up. He asked all who had been members for less than 10 months to sit
down, and a few sat. Then he "pitched" the brotherhood to them in a way that
I would expect most to come back in August to seal their brotherhood in the
OA. Last year our brotherhood conversion was embarasingly low.. I bet this
year we do much better! (Actually we had more at the Spring fellowship than
in all of last year so we have already done better.)
I mention this as a great idea for any other OA lodges out there looking to
build up the brotherhood.

PS. YES! OA membership must be carried in the council where the boy
is registered, but you can hang out with arrowmen everywhere. Oops, that's
arrow-people - our first two females go through this summer.
