For those of you who want to stay active in scouting while at college but
do not have an APO chapter to join or do not want to join the one your
college has, Don may a good suggestion with the O-A program. There are
other alternatives as well.
Simply put, register yourself. There is the district, most are usually
looking for more help, there always seems to be a need for unit
commissioners, and if you talk to a knowledgeble D.E., you might even get
yourself directed to a Scout Troop which could use some extra adult
leadership. If you are under 21, you can join a local Explorer post. Just
because you only live in the college town eight to nine months of the year,
does not mean you can not join a unit or the district committee. On the
district committee you can help the camping chairman or the activities
chairman with their evens and activities. There is always the position of
Merit Badge Counselor and if you let your immagination go, there are lots
of things you can do and several ways you can register.
By the way, if you register in your college town, you do not need to
unregister from your home troop. But if you do not transfer, but maintain
two registrations you will have to pay twice.
