Okay......once more with heartfelt feelings:
CUB SCOUTS CANNOT go on a overnight camping trip UNLESS it is part of a local
Council program (i.e., a local Council has a week or two set aside when a
group of Packs can camp at the local camp; a District encampment for Scouts
invited Packs to camp overnight). EVEN THEN, it is "family camping" (mom or dad
or both with or without sibs).
WEBELOS CAN go on a overnight camping trip, as part of the local Council program
(Two weeks at the scout camp set aside for WEBELOS dens to camp...) or as par
of the Pack's program. THE WEBELOS leader and Assistant ARE NOT subsitiutes for
the one boy-one adult ratio "recommended" by BSA. (THIS IS NOT ABSOLUTE...please
refer to a earlier comment made by the policy maker at National...the deal is
this is what BSA is RECOMMENDING Local Councils go with from a child safety and
overall program point of view ("Cub Scouting is for the FAMILY").
The overall intent again, is to allow for FAMILIES (FRIENDS) to be with the
Cub/WEBELOS Scout while participating in these events. This is the cornerstone
of Cub Scouting and while preparation for Scouting is in there, the opioions
I have been listening to is that "let's save the camping for Scouting. Cub Scout
ing should be about doing things together as a family and sharing family
(I DON'T AGREE WITH THIS STUFF......I'm just repeating what I have been
finding out about this issue!)
I agree with Steve. This is upsetting to say the least and as WEBELOS Den Leader
I am now being told that unless I have a parent with each member, I cannot ta
them camping overnight!
It does not make sense that we are tring to transition them to Scouting and at
the same time keeping them in the fold.
