Recently at our Council Campsite we have started to have a problem
with beavers. We have always had beavers on site and have been
able to peacably coexist however their population has exploded
and new dams are being built. The result of this is that
our dam for the camp lake is being damaged, a wetland which
holds several rare species of plants is in danger of being flooded
and there are problems with the drainage field of the latrine.
Now the obvious solution is to live trap the beavers and release them
elsewere - which is what we proposed to do. When we approached the
DNR they told us we were not alone in our problem and could suggest
nowhere to release them. (They then offered us a permit to shoot
the beavers!!!!!). We have discussed this problem in our camp
conservation committee and currently the best we can do is
release the beavers in the WVU forest (since one of our members
is the director this is not a problem). However we are well aware
that this is not prime beaver habitat and many of the animals
will die. So as a last ditch effot I thought I would ask
the list for suggestions - Do you want any beavers?
