Wow! Why such sensitivity about bad management? Those closest to the fire
feel the most heat? I guess you whould have to be more aware of the past
history and tradition of more than 30 years of personal scout experience
in this council and more than 80 combined years of Family contributions
inclduing a SIlver Beaver, several Eagle Scouts, a years of service on
a Camp staff of a great camp that is no more to understand my concerns
of the constant change of direction in our council. Concerns like where
did all the money go when the camp got sold, and where did all the
dedicated contributions go to the recent capital campaign? What happened
to the NEW camp on Council hill, and the Lake with no water? I guess
when your own family has given so much to scouting, and it has all
been sold, and racent contributions not going to the intended source, and
then watching as traditions are torn down, after you just spent a weekend
on repairs. . . You get more than a little cynical about the management.
Sure Dave thinks that 3/10 of a mile is not problem for an Adult size scout,
but try spending a week with newer scouts (11) at one of those sites. Remember,
the scouts also have to hike back to the site from the program areas,
before they hike back to the dinning "tent". So now figure .5 miles x 2 or
at least a mile for LUNCH! Factor in the time it takes to get them organized
and up to the other end of camp, then subtact all that time to get 11 year
olds back and forth from meals from the time they have for program or free
time! Repeat this for each meal, then also for flags!
I do for the most part give the Camp staff credit for a great program with
the resources that they have. But for what looks like great new improvements
to current staff, looks like destruction of old traditions, and waste of very
limited resourses, for people that have seen these grand plans come and go.
I guess it must be all in your persective. And, yes I still like a cabin
with a fireplace! Scouting needs to have some link to the past.
