I've managed to get a little bit of research done for those of
you out there who'd like to use the Mac-format scouting graphics
First of all, you will need a utility for your IBM called PKUNZIP
(It decodes the IBM ZIP-archive format). It's available from most
user groups and via anonymous ftp from various places -- your
local IBM guru can probably give you a hand using it.
There are utilities for the IBM to use the files as they stand.
UNSIT23.ARC (An IBM file which decodes Mac stuffit Archives), and
XBIN23.ZIP, which I've been told will at least decode the BINHQX
format used by most Mac-ites for ASCII file transfer. They're
availabel by anonymous ftp from simtel20.army.mil (in the PD:<
MSDOS.MAC> directory) and from wuarchive.wustl.edu (in the /
Once you've unpacked them (the graphics, that is), you need to
convert them from PICT format to something your IBM can use (some
CAN use PICT directly -- check your software). ALCHMY14.ZIP
(available from simtel20.army.mil in the PD1:<MSDOS.GRAPHICS>
directory) will convert between PICT and a number of other IBM
formats (TIFF, PCX, and so on).
Like I said, I'm not tremendously familiar with most of the
shareware IBM products... I only program the beasties... I play
around with Macintoshes much more. If you have any questions,
send email to me directly. I hope this opens the files up to a
Merry Summer Camping, all!!! (Anybody got an extra nurse???)
