I have been reading SCOUTS-L for several months but have not yet
participated in any discussions, but when I read Judith's dilema
I decided it might be worth my two cents.
I cannot comment on the program that the Girl Scouts run, but I have
heard Judith's disillustionment (if you will) in the movement many times
As a Unit Commissioner in Exploring and an Associate Advisor in a Post,
I would like to encourage Judith and others to look into the BSA's
Exploring program. Exploring offers a variety of avenues from Career
Awareness Posts such as Law Enforcement, Medical, you-name-it to
Activity Posts such as Rock Climbing, Canoeing, and High Adventure
(a combo of many areas) to name a few. The difference is that the
Exploring program is for both male and female between the ages of 14
and 21. The Exploring program follows many of the guidelines that
the Boy Scouts have established and found successful. However be aware
that Exploring in your area might be a little different than any
other area, whereas many councils/districts run it as they see fit so
that it will not pull older scouts from their troops.
Talk to your DE or Commissioner to find out more about Exploring as
an option for (insert your unsuccessful program here) in your area.
BTW, as a Graphic Designer and Illustrator I have several computer
generated Scouting illustrations that I hope to have in the SCOUTS-L
archive in the next few weeks.
