Boy do I know where you are coming from! I just had a similar
experience just 2 months ago at a campout and am still working
things out (this was by far the worst instance of vandalism
I've had in my 8 years as scoutmaster).
But ... here is what we are doing:
First off the boys involved are suspended from campouts for the
next 3 months (ie till summer camp). Second, the boys and their
fathers have spent 3 full days of work (over spring vacation)
at the scout camp that was damaged. There still remains some
damaged boats that need repair that they will return to the
camp for. Finally, I have made changes to our program to
insure an Asst Scoutmaster (I'm calling them "Patrol Advisors")
to be with each patrol AT ALL TIMES. This include meetings as
well as campouts.
In dealing with this problem, only the scouts involved, their
parents and our committee chairman really know about all of this.
We felt it was not good to emphasize the incident in any way, so
we've kept it from the troop as a whole.
I know there is no perfect solution to these problems and not
all ideas will work in every situation. I am interested in
other viewpoints and ideas.
Good luck Don.
