I have some news that might be of interest to those attending Philmont
I just received the staff's annual fall happy holidays/review/outlook/mail-
your-application letter saturday, and there were some big items which will
affect staff as well as campers.
The biggest thing is that the requirements for attending Philmont have been
strenghtened. Instead of being 1st class or son of an advisor, the new
requirements state participants must be "13 years of age by Jan. 1 of year
attending." This is the same as it was before I started working at Philmont,
and what the staff has been asking for since I started working there.
They will be leinient this next year since most of the literature has already
gone out, and crews have reserved space based on the old requirements, but
this is a step in the right direction.
The revision of the Philmont map, which has been promised for so long, is
expected next spring. There will be 3 separate maps, 1 for each of the
north, south, and central countries. The scale will be larger (1:24000 from
1:48000...New ones have the scale of a USGS 7 1/2 minute series map).
They are also expecting a revision of the Philmont Fieldguide. (for those who
are unfamiliar, the Philmont fieldguide list most of the fauna found
on the property, including pictures of many of the wild flowers. Animal life,
elevation zones, geology, and weather are also included. I highly
recommend it for anyone who visits Philmont.
Some new projects include a well at Upper Dean Cow Camp (will no longer be a
dry camp), and new showers will be available at Dean Cow Camp. You now can
get a shower after hiking up the Turkey Creek Canyon.
These are the major changes that campers will notice, and all sound for the
better. I just wish I could be back working at Philmont next summer......
