About conservation camporees.....Five to ten years ago a conservation
camporee was used to repair damages to the camp and necessary upkeep.
Today, conservation camporees have taken on a whole new meaning.....
The themes seem to be let's fix the environment......This is a step in
the right direction.......Just one note, though.
The last conservation camporee that I went to (Camp Cachalot,
Moby Dick Council, Greater New Bedford/Fall River areas, Massachusetts)
was an old fashioned "let's fix up our camp" one.......Now, I'm not
saying that there's anything wrong with that, but what really got to
me was that, at the cracker barrel, one of the co-chairmen of the event
gave a pep talk. At the end of the pep talk he said.........
"The purpose of this weekend is not to work the boys ragged,
but to make them more aware of their environment"
The co-chair then took a drink out of his STYROFOAM cup.
Please, if you are considering having a conservation camporee, or
any scouting event, please, please, please, strongly suggest that people
bring their own drinking cups. A good way to do this is to not supply
anyone with drinking cups.....eventually it will catch on with the troops.
This makes events cheaper, cleaner, and helps make the boys more
