Hi - Having just subscribed to this list, I am sending this introduction as
suggested in SCOUTS-L INTRO.
Name: Dorothy Christoff
Parents, Brother with Sister-in-Law, 2 nephews (28 and 13) and
1 niece (25)
Occupation: Assistant Director of Educational Placement (we work with
teachers and other school personnel) at Purdue University
Scouting: No background either as a scout or with scouting, other than
my brother (older) was a Boy Scout as a kid.
I am on the Board of Directors of the Sycamore Girl Scout
Council (since Spring of 1989). I was asked to be on the Board
because of my background with the local YWCA (President and
Board Member for six years) and it was felt my background with
the YWCA and with social service agencies in general would be
helpful to the Council B of D.
My interest in this list is two-fold: (1) I am interested in ANY community
organization that works with/for kids and always looking for ideas that
might be helpful in our community, and (2) as the only Council Board member
with access to BitNet, I thought I might be able to pass on information
about troop activities/concerns to others who might find them useful.
Our Council serves a seven county area in West/North/Central Indiana,
centered primarily in Lafayette (about half-way between Chicago and
I am currently chair of the Fund Development Committee and we are seeking
ways to make our Council budget/finances more dependent on 'adult generated'
income and less dependent on cookie sales. We are looking at 'events' that
might generate profits of $3-5000 (or more!), while at the same time, not
taking any income sources from any of our troops. We are currently looking
at such things as: a golf tournament; some kind of auction; 'progressive'
raffle; some kind of 'celebrity' evening (possibly with a dinner); various
kinds of 'festival' events; things that might tie in with Earth Day,
recycling, or the topic of Literacy; ...
If any of you have had any experience with 'major events' of this type, I
would be very interested in hearing details, comments, criticisms,
suggestions, or whatever...
Feel free to post to the list or directly to me (DCHRISTO @ INSTEPS).
