What's in a Name?

I also have been asked by our Assistant Scout Executive if we'd like
to code our High Adventure Post as a career or hobby oriented post and keep
the name Explorers. That's because I was less than thrilled to hear about
the name change. In practical terms, it means we have a couple thousand
dollars worth of T-shirts, jackets, and literature that say we are
Explorers, which our post and members really can't afford to replace. Just
as important is that we've spent the past 4 years building name recognition
for the Exploring program in our area and now we'll have to begin again with
the name Venturing, which I'm sure will cause lots of confusion. It would be
nice to know what exactly the differences will be in the Venturing &
Exploring programs so we know what we might be missing out on if we decided
to stay with the Exploring name.
On a long term note, I hope, once the change is made, Boy Scouts
will leave names for Venturing/Exploring programs and awards alone. Gaining
recognition and respect for programs and awards takes time. One of the
reasons the Boy Scout Eagle is so well recognized is because it has been
around for so long, and though the requirements have changed, the name has not.
