I am very new to this list, so I'll start by introducing
myself to all of you. My name is Guy, and at the present,
myself not involved in scouting, although my son, Bryan has
joined a newly formed Serch and Rescue Explorer post nearby.
My reason for writing is to briefly share my thoughts on BSA
as they related to past experiences. In 1991 several adults
in the area wnet to Sweden for a business exchange program
and return with an invitation from the local Swedish Scouts
to attend Natura '93, Sweden's national Jamboree. We were
The BSA was not so thrilled. The local council even less
than thrilled. They went sofar as to try to stop us. We
persisted in our endeavors, and thru the support of the
local Gril Scout council we succeded. The girls were
involved because, in Sweden scouting is a mixed bag. Not a
bad a idea, with proper planning and supervision.
We needed to raise enough money for 17 people to go, 12
scouts (8 boys, 4 girls,
1 male adult, 3 women adult chaperones). We ended up
raising approx $22,000 in 2 1/2 years, thru various fund
raisers and donations. The area troops were very upset with
that and thought that we wer taking money from them. The
fund raisiers that we scheduled we not anything that they
had ever done nor wopuld think of doing, nor would we
schedule anything whne the local troops either boys or girls
had something planned. Therefore not intruding in their
events. Keep in mind that all scouts involved were members
of these same area troops.
We were expected however to turn over 10% of all proceeds
from all events to the area council. But they, when
approached by mysel, requesting ONE council patch PER boy
scout for trading purposes, (as a show of support from their
coucil) was DENIED.
Needless to say we got there without their help. To make a
long story short, not long after we returned, it did not
take the local committee loing to start finding faults with
my VOLUNTEERISM, and not being around for thier events. I
had provided the CHAIRPERSON a copy oif my work shift
schedule for an entire year so that she could see what I was
working. No, I did not expect favoritism, and things to be
planned around my working, but merely as an understanding of
what I was up against.
I have been out of scouting for almost two years, and yes I
do miss it, not the people that I was involved with, but
what it can do for the kids.
Some people seem to forget what it is really intended for.
Anyway, thanks for listn'n in!!!
