Post 1824 in Cypress, Texas puts on a shooting-sports weekend
every spring for the BSA Troops in our area.
(A little background may be necessary -- so here goes.)
Here in the Sam Houston Area Council, many of the Boy Scouts that attend our
summer camps take Archery, Rifle, and/or Shotgun shooting merit
badges. The hard part is, it takes lots of practice for some of them
to qualify (hitting enough targets/goups/whatever) for the badges.
There are just too many of them and not enough instructors.
So, what we decided to do is hold a "catch-up" weekend where the boys
from local Troops could come out and complete the entire merit
badges, or just work on their shooting. We started out smal, and now
invite about 5-6 Troops for the weekend at Lost Pines Scout
Reservation near Bastrop, Texas (a 3 hour drive) and have now
expanded to include some extras, such as the Indian (Native American) Lore
merit badge, a hunter's education safety course, a rapelling tower,
and some activities for the younger Scouts. Our biggest problem is
finding the range officers and shooting coaches--we always have enogh
to provide one-on-one instruction. The other logistics are
transporting the firearms/ammunition, and the lunch that we provide
Saturday in the field for everyone.
Hope this helps,
